Environmental Research Institute of Shandong University

The Environment Research Institute at Shandong University was established in November 2003. It is an independent unit directly under the university for supporting scientific research and postgraduate training. It was founded by Professor Wang Wenxing, a famous environmental science expert in China and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Discipline construction has always been one of the priorities of the Environmental Research Institute. There are 4 disciplines conferring doctorate degrees, including 2 first-level disciplines, environmental science and engineering, and 2 second-level disciplines, environmental chemistry and environmental biology. The main research fields are: environmental chemistry, environmental toxicology, environmental biology and environmental ecology.

Talent is the first primary resource of the institute. The institute attaches great importance to the introduction and training of outstanding talents. It not only introduces well-known scholars from home and abroad, but also strives to cultivate its own academic leaders. To increase the training of talents, in a planned and focused manner, the institute always supports young academic leaders and outstanding young backbone teachers to go abroad for further study. Presently, there are 33 faculty members in the institute, including 14 professors, 9 associate professors, and 4 lecturers and assistant researchers. Among them, there is 1 academician, 1 Taishan Scholar Distinguished Expert, 1 Overseas High-level Young Talent, 1 National Natural Science Foundation Outstanding Youth Science Fund winner, 2 Taishan Scholar Young Experts, 3 Provincial Outstanding Youth Fund winners , 2 New Century Outstanding Talents from the Ministry of Education, 3 "Qilu Young Scholars", etc. There are currently 151 postgraduates, including 48 doctoral students and 103 master students.

The laboratory construction of the Environmental Research Institute is operated with a high starting point and strict requirements. There are more than 20 advanced large-scale instruments in the laboratory, including ion chromatography, atomic absorption, multi-stage aerosol sampler, DIONEX GP-IC, inverted fluorescence microscope, and Fourier infrared spectrometer. The institute has undertaken a number of national, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, including: National Natural Science Foundation of China, New Century Excellent Talents Support Program, Shandong Province Excellent Young and Middle-aged Scientist Research Award Fund, etc.

The Environmental Research Institute put great stress on foreign cooperation, including joint training of graduate students, teacher training, and cooperation in scientific research projects. It has good academic exchanges and project cooperation relations with Harvard University, University of North Carolina, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and other famous universities. The institute has also established good cooperative relations with the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences, the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University and other organizations.
