Environmental Research Institute successfully held the 2020 Summer Camp for National Outstanding College Students online from July 9th to 10th. More than 70 outstanding junior undergraduates from more than 40 domestic universities participated in this summer camp.

Under the requirements of normalization of epidemic prevention and control, the institute has innovated the organization format and carried out the entire summer camp activities in clouds. The opening ceremony of the summer camp was held on the morning of July 9. The vice dean, Professor Xue Likun, presided over the ceremony and the dean, Professor Zhang Qingzhu, comprehensively introduced the situation of institute from ten aspects, including subject direction, faculty, platform equipment, academic research, and talent training.

Subsequently, Professor Xie Huijun, Professor Yan Caiqing, and Associate Professor Li Yanwei presented their wonderful academic reports to the students titled by "Constructed Wetland Wastewater Treatment Technology", "Current Situation and Prevention of China's Atmospheric Environmental Pollution", and "Application of Quantum Mechanics and Molecular Mechanics in the Environmental Field", respectively. Then, two representatives of outstanding alumni of the Institute, Wang Zhe (the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) and Tang Shanshan (the Hangzhou Institute of Advanced Studies, National University of Science and Technology of China), shared their experiences with the students through two topics named "Some Humble Opinions on How Graduate Students Do Research" and "The Sufferings and Pleasures of Graduate Life". In the final teacher-student interaction session, the students actively interacted with the teacher and the atmosphere was warm.

The "cloud live broadcast" activity of campus and laboratory was held on the afternoon of July 9th. Before the start, a well-produced promotional video of the Environmental Research Institute 2020 summer camp was shown. Subsequently, under the auspices of Professor Du Lin, the live broadcast activity officially began with the introduction of the campus’s iconic building—the library. The live broadcast team introduced the most realistic campus environment to the students as they walked around. In the live broadcast of the research institute, the live broadcast team went deep into the laboratory and office, and visually demonstrated the scientific research conditions and office environment of the teachers and students. Finally, the live broadcast team came to the high-level platform of the campus restaurant and filmed the distant Aoshan Bay with the cameras. The whole live broadcast activity also finished, when the screen froze in the middle of the campus and the sea. The students expressed their unfulfilled views and were deeply attracted by the campus environment and advanced scientific research conditions.

On July 10, the expert team assessed the students participating in the summer camp and selected the outstanding ones. The interview mainly includes oral English and comprehensive quality assessment. By examining the students' English proficiency, professional theoretical knowledge, language expression ability and the coverage of relevant subject knowledge, the expert team thoroughly inspected the students' comprehensive capabilities.

"Beside Aoshan Bay. Blue sea and sky. Greenery lingers. Red Mansion glistens." At this point, the 2020 Summer Camp of the Environment Research Institute for Outstanding College Students has come to a successful conclusion. Expecting the majority of outstanding college students to continue their studies in the Environment Research Institute.
